Swimming is Believing

August 17, 2011

Hi from McPopper Children’s Hospital! It’s Lily at the computer, and I hope all of you out there are having a good day. The middle of August is already here, and it’s funny how summer days go by so fast. Maybe it’s because we never want them to end! Some people call them “lazy summer days,” but I don’t think they’re that lazy at all. Summer days are full of fun! The playroom is always buzzing during the summer.

And speaking of summer, do you know how to swim? I learned when I was four. It’s fun to do, especially when it’s hot outside. Cherry-Ot told me that on this day in 2008 at the Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China, American swimmer Michael Phelps became the first person to ever win eight gold medals at one Olympics. Michael Phelps competed in eight events, five individual and three relays, and in seven of them he finished with world-record times. Unbelievable!

What’s really interesting about Michael Phelps is that he has a learning disability. When he was nine, he was diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. But that didn’t hold him back! He faced challenges (like me and Max), but he didn’t let them get in the way of following his dreams. That’s the coolest part of all!

And before I go, here’s a joke from Dr. Duck Ling:
What’s Kwon Do’s favorite swimming stroke?
The dog paddle!

And don’t forget…have a critterrific day!
