Leap for Leap Year!

February 29, 2012

Hi from McPopper Children’s Hospital! It’s Lily at the computer, I hope you’re enjoying this very special day. Why is it special, you ask? Because today is February 29th, and this date only comes along once every four years! That’s because 2012 is a Leap Year, and that means we add an extra day to the calendar. So while most years have 365 days, Leap Years have 366 days. That’s an extra 24 hours to smile and laugh during 2012…or better yet, I think we should all actually leap in the air! Cherry-Ot told me that Leap Years are needed to keep our calendar lined up with the Earth as it travels around the sun. Since it takes the earth around 365.25 days to make its way around the sun, we need to add an extra day every four years to get our calendars in sync with the Earth’s revolution.

Beary Bruised likes Leap Years because they remind him of a rhyme that a lot of people use to remember how many days there are in each month. There are a bunch of variations of this poem, and the one I know goes like this:

Thirty days hath September
April, June, and November.
All the rest have thirty-one,
Except February alone,
Which has twenty-eight days clear
And twenty-nine in each Leap Year.

Do you know another version? Be sure to write and tell us. And don’t forget…have a critterrific Leap Day!
