Teddy Bears Everywhere!

July 11, 2012

Hey, what’s up? It’s me, Max, and I hope you’re having an awesome July day. And speaking of awesome, yesterday was “Teddy Bear Picnic Day” here at the hospital. Lily and I had a picnic lunch in the playroom with a few of our stuffed bears and the Hospital Critterz. It was a lot of fun! We read some picture books to our stuffed bears, and Dr. Duck Ling even told bear jokes. Here’s one of my favorites:

Why don’t Teddy Bears wear shoes?
Because they like to go bearfoot!

Cherry-Ot told me that President Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president of the United States, was the inspiration behind the Teddy Bear. While on a hunting trip in Mississippi in 1902, President Roosevelt refused to shoot a wounded bear himself. Because of this, a newspaper ran a cartoon drawing of President Roosevelt next to a cute and cuddly bear. And after seeing this cartoon, a shop owner in Brooklyn, New York, named Morris Michtom sent a stuffed bear that his wife made to President Roosevelt. He asked the President if he could call the bear a “Teddy Bear” because “Teddy” was the president’s nickname. President Roosevelt said yes, and the stuffed bears were really popular. The Michtoms went on to start their own toy company. So cool!

Bye for now!
