F.U.N. with F.D.R.

Hi from McPopper Children’s Hospital! It’s Lily at the computer, and I hope you’re all having a great day. Even though January is almost over, the last days of January contain a very special birthday. Cherry-Ot told me that today is President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s birthday! Franklin Delano Roosevelt (who went by his initials F.D.R.) was the 32nd President of the United States. He was born on January 30, 1882, in Hyde Park, New York, and his fifth cousin is Theodore Roosevelt, who was the 26th President of the United States. That’s pretty cool!

F.D.R. was president during a hard economic time known as the Great Depression. Many people lost their jobs, and they had very little money to buy food and clothing. So in 1933, F.D.R. created something called the New Deal that helped people get back to work. The New Deal was a government program that gave people different kinds of jobs that were meant to help improve America, like building roads and tunnels and constructing buildings and schools. People even had jobs to paint murals on these new buildings in order to beautify America. (I think I would’ve liked that job the most!)

So from all of us here at McPopper Children’s Hospital, Happy Birthday, F.D.R., and we hope all of you have a critterrific day!
