Reaching Great Heights

July 24, 2013

Hey, what’s up? It’s me, Max, and I hope you’re having an awesome day! Cherry-Ot told me that today, July 24th, is Amelia Earhart’s birthday. Have you heard of Amelia Earhart? She was the first female pilot to fly alone across the Atlantic Ocean. How cool is that? I think it’d be awesome to fly a plane. I bet the view from the cockpit is pretty amazing!

I learned that Amelia Earhart was born in Atchison, Kansas in 1897, and when she moved to Los Angeles to live with her mom in 1920, Amelia began a fascination with planes. Remember, the idea of flying was a new back then, especially for a woman to fly, but that didn’t stop Amelia. She took flying lessons, and even after moving away and becoming a social worker, she stayed true to her love of flying and helped found the Ninety-Nines, which was a group of female pilots made up of women from all around the world. Then, after a lot of practice and hard work, she made her historic journey across the Atlantic.

Even when others doubted her, Amelia never doubted herself. But sadly, a few years later, while attempting to fly across the world, she, Frederick J. Noonan (her navigator), and her plane went missing. No one knows exactly what happened, but it’s certain that Amelia Earhart changed the world.
