The Gift of Writing

Hi from McPopper Children’s Hospital! It’s Lily at the computer, and today we are honoring the birthday of one of our favorite authors, Shel Silverstein. Have you heard of Shel Silverstein? He was a wonderful writer of poems and stories that people of all ages loved and enjoyed. He was also a talented cartoonist, illustrator, playwright, and even a songwriter. He did it all! Some of our favorite Shel Silverstein works are The Giving Tree, Lafcadio: The Lion Who Shot Back, A Light in the Attic, Where the Sidewalk Ends, and Falling Up. If you haven’t read any of these yet, we hope that you check them out from the library and give them a look. And if you’ve already read these, it’s the perfect day to reread them as well! I know you’ll like them.

Cherry-Ot told me that Shel Silverstein, whose full name is Sheldon Allan Silverstein, was born in Chicago on September 25, 1930. And on behalf of children (and Critterz!) everywhere, we wanted to thank Shel Silverstein for the imaginative stories, tales, and poems that he brought into the lives of so many people. Much like the tree in The Giving Tree, he gave so much to all of us!

Do you have a favorite Shel Silverstein book or poem? Be sure to let us know! And don’t forget…have a critterrific day!
